Service learning with the Japanese community in Indianapolis
The Japanese Studies program launched the service-learning project in Spring 2022. The project connects IU Indianapolis students studying Japanese with those in the Japanese community of Indiana, who are learning English.
Specifically, IU Indianapolis students serve as private tutors for local Japanese children, assisting them with their English and homework, as well as volunteering as English-conversation tutors for Japanese individuals in the Indianapolis metro area. For example, in spring 2022, 15 students in the Japanese Studies program helped 17 Japanese children and adults learn English conversation at Hamilton East Public Library in Fishers, Indiana, every Monday and Thursday.
