English for Academic Purposes

English for Academic Purposes

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) prepares undergraduate and graduate students at Indiana University Indianapolis to meet academic expectations for communication at all university levels.

EAP program courses and specialized resources help international students improve their English language fluency as well as their writing, research, and communication skills. Small class sizes and dedicated faculty help create a friendly, collaborative environment for active learning.

At IU Indianapolis, you will take classes in modern, high-tech classrooms and computer labs. During your EAP courses, you will engage in classroom instruction that promotes cross-cultural awareness and critical thinking skills.

You can take advantage of language facilities that include digital and multimedia labs for classes and self-monitored, independent practice in listening, speaking, and pronunciation. You can also visit the ESL tutoring center and the University Writing Center to meet with staff who are trained to assist EAP students.

Plus, you can take part in social, cultural, and academic events on campus to help ease your transition into American culture and the campus community.

How EAP works

You apply for admission to IU Indianapolis, not directly to EAP. If you meet the academic criteria and need English language support, your letter of admission will place you in EAP.

EAP is a sequence of four courses, two in each of the first two semesters, taken alongside other undergraduate courses.

High-intermediate and advanced EAP courses are offered to students entering IU Indianapolis in degree programs as well as non-degree students who are interested in enhancing their English language skills.

EAP courses are also open to IU Indianapolis international staff and faculty.
