Admission to General Studies Program

Ready for flexibility and a multidisciplinary course of study? The General Studies program is designed to meet your needs, with consideration for your job history/skills, previous college credits, and life experiences.

Admissions Requirements

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Documented significant work and life experience.
  • Desire to complete a flexible interdisciplinary degree program.
  • Transfer students must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or have been out of college for at least one semester.

How to Apply

Choose which best describes you:

New students

If you have never been admitted to any campus of Indiana University and have never attended a college or university, you will submit your application through IU Indianapolis Steps to Apply and select the box I’m a first year student.

Transfer students

If you have never been admitted to any campus of Indiana University but have completed coursework from other colleges or universities, you will submit your application through IU Indianapolis Steps to Apply and select the box I’m transferring to IU Indianapolis.

You may be able to transfer an associate degree or up to 64 credit hours from a regionally accredited two-year college and up to 90 credit hours from a regionally accredited four-year college or university. Meet with your advising team to determine if the course meets equivalencies.

Previous/returning IU students

  • If you have a previous admission to Indiana University and have not been enrolled for one or more years, you will submit your application through IU Indianapolis Steps to Apply and select I’m returning to IU Indianapolis.
  • If you have a previous admission to IU Indianapolis and have been out less than two semesters (with the exception of summer terms) or are returning from military leave, and are interested in pursuing the General Studies degree, contact the program office at (317) 278-2630 or email CTAS@iu.edu.

Current IU Indianapolis students

If you are a current student at IU Indianapolis and interested in changing your major to General Studies, your first step is to meet with Desiree Jaynes or Paul Spencer. You can schedule an appointment by using the Student Appointment Scheduler.
