Political Science and Law

Political Science and Law

Are you curious about how governments work, why policies succeed or fail, or what drives political movements around the world? Political science is the field that explores these questions and more. It combines analytical thinking with a global perspective to help you understand the forces that shape society.

As a political science major, you’ll become part of a vibrant, global community of students and scholars who are passionate about making a difference. Whether you're interested in law, public service, international relations, advocacy, or business, you’ll learn to think critically and independently with tolerance for others and concern for current affairs.

Our faculty are nationally and internationally recognized experts who bring cutting-edge research into the classroom. You’ll explore topics like:

  • Government and public policy
  • Voting behavior and political psychology
  • Constitutional law and civil rights
  • Social justice and global human rights

Career paths for Political Science majors

Majoring in political science can qualify you for a career in private for-profit and nonprofit organizations, as well as public sector organizations. Students often pursue careers in business, law, consulting, state, local, and federal government, journalism and communications, international organization, finance, polling and campaign management, community service and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and pre-college and college teaching.

You may also choose to use your political science education to participate in community organizations, electoral politics, movements on behalf of specific policies, and to seek elective or administrative positions in government. While many of these are voluntary activities, participation in them develops skills and creates opportunities for career success.

Pre-Law Program

Political Science is one of the preferred undergraduate majors for students interested in attending law school. There is no specific curriculum or course of study associated with pre-law – at IU Indianapolis or at any other university in the United States – but in response to demand, this pre-law program is designed to provide advice, to help you learn more about law school and the legal profession, and to offer courses you may find helpful.

Launch a career in law

If you're interested in the legal field, political science is a strong foundation. Many graduates go on to become:

  • Attorneys
  • Judicial clerks
  • Paralegals

You can also pursue meaningful work in areas like civil rights, juvenile justice, and public interest law, where you’ll help shape and defend the legal principles that govern society.
